Happy New Year everyone! 2014 is already proving to be a great year and to celebrate this is the first of a new series of paintings on which I am working, developed from a conceptual idea while whale watching, a love of dance and Gerhard Richter. Yes, I know, none of these have a lot to do with each other, but hey! Its called Art!???????
And so what is the mythical legend of Atlantis all about? I Googled Whikipaedia and this is what it says,
“Atlantis (Ancient Greek: Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, “island of Atlas“) is a mythical island first mentioned in Plato‘s dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written in c. 360 BC. According to Plato, Atlantis was a land and sea power situated “in front of the Pillars of Hercules” that had conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of the Athenian lawgiver Solon, i.e. in the 10th millennium BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune.”
Whether by accident or design this painting reminds of a time centuries past where earth, sea and man became one.
